Day 5: Brookings, OR to Klamath, CA, 49 mi.

The morning started cool and foggy. We stopped at 10 miles for $3.99 breakfast at a casino.  Then in Crescent City we stopped at another casino because we had  $20 free play coupons.  Ron walked out with $124!  He was a happy man.  We got a sandwich "to go" for our future energy needs.

If you have driven 101 you probably  remember the hill south of Crescent City. If you bicycle the route you definitely remember!  It is at least a 5 mile incline that requires a grinding low speed of 3 or 4 mph.  Most of it had a good shoulder. Sometimes an entire lane was closed for construction and we could.use that space. We warmed up with the climb and gradually were down to shorts and jerseys. When we hit the descent we almost froze and quickly bundled up again.

We are staying in a motel in Klamath (the only one but it is surprisingly nice) on Ron's winnings.  Tomorrow we hope to reach Eureka.

Day 3: Charleston to Humbug Mt. State Park (54 miles)

We started the day with our 7 Devils Road climb. There are 7+ hills in 12 miles.  Not much traffic. We stopped at the top and chatted with two other bicyclists.  They are both from Portland but not traveling together.  Yesterday we met a young woman who was riding probably twice as fast as we are.

We are camping tonight. Ron is ready when he has his red wine and/or beer and camp wood.  It is a sunny day.  It is very windy on the coast but we are protected here. Tomorrow we will ride to Brookings, about 50 miles.  There is a favorite Mexican restaurant there.

Day 4: Humbug to Brookings. 50 miles. (Tues)

Humbug Mt state park is 6 miles south of Port Orford. It is a beautiful park. We sat on the beach yesterday and enjoyed the views--a bright sunny day.  Today was a hilly ride. We had a sunny day with the wind at our backs. By the time we reached Brookings the fog had come in and it was cool. We had to stop and dig our coats out.  We will enjoy Mexican food soon. We are 6 miles from California.

Day 2 Florence to Charleston. OR (51 miles)

We were surprised to hear rain on our tent last night. We dug out our rain clothes and packed a wet tent and were off by 8:20 am. We had alot of hills and some wind. We are in a motel near the port of Charleston. We had a nice seafood meal. We will start tomorrow riding the seven devils road. . 15 miles of hills. NOT Ron's favorite. (The first time we rode that it was raining. Sharon had Ron's raincoat and she was riding ahead of him.)

Rogue River Trail

Hello family and friends:  We just completed a 4 day hike of the Rogue River trail (41 miles).  Even though it was very rainy in the Willamette Valley, we only had a few sprinkles on us so it was great conditions.  The scenery was great.  We stayed in 3 lodges along the trail.  We celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary on May 25--as we completed the trail that day.

We will be leaving June 1 on a bike trip from Lincoln City area to San Clemente, CA which is north of San Diego.  Sharon's sister, Helen, lives there.  We will stop to see Dustin in San Francisco and expect to spend Father's Day weekend with him.  We plan to make blog entries along the way.  We also will have our cell phone:  503 763 0754.  We appreciate your prayers and comments.

Salem, Massachusetts: 10 miles

Just so everyone knows. . .we made it to Salem yesterday. We took the ferry from Long Wharf in Boston.  It was about a one hour ride. Not surprising Sharon had some seasickness, but not bad. The views were nice.

The total miles for our trip was over 3800. We carried a first aid bag and did not need to open it!  People have been asking what was the best part.  Meeting many very nice people! We were surprised that we enjoyed North Dakota as one of the highlights.  We have lots of stories but we will try not to wear out listening ears.  We certainly watch the direction of the wind more than we used to.  We will take our bikes to Salem Cyclery today and they will ship them home for us.

Thank you for following along.  Especially thank you for the blog comments, emails, phone calls and prayer support.

We fly home Monday.
